Our Staff...
The Department receives feedback and oversight from
the North Shore Board of Health. The Board of Health consists of nine members
representing each of the five participating communities. The Board meets at least
quarterly
Services and Programs
ADULT HEALTH SCREENING
- Offered periodically, by appointment. Includes blood analysis
for cholesterol, gout, diabetes, anemia, heart, kidney, and liver disease; blood pressure
check; computerized health questionnaire and discussion of results with a registered nurse
.
ANIMAL BITES
- For questions on health effects of animal bites, contact the Health
Department. Report all animal bites to humans to:

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS
- By appointment at the Health Department. Also available last
Tuesday of each month, 2 - 4 PM, at the North Shore Library.
COMMUNICABLE
DISEASE CONTROL
- Communicable diseases are reported to the Health Department by
physicians, clinics, family members, or the ill person. The Health Department nurses offer
investigation, education, and control measures to assure the safety of the individual,
family, and community.
COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT
- The Health Departments team of registered nurses continuously
assesses each communitys health needs and resources, to assure appropriate policies
and services. Citizens and businesses are also involved in the assessment process.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
- Investigation and referral of complaints concerning food
establishments, public swimming facilities, and human health hazards.
- Information on food and water safety, air quality, lead, etc.
- Brown Deer: Inspection and licensing of food sellers and restaurants;
swimming facility inspection.
- Water quality monitoring (Doctors Park Beach).
HEALTH
EDUCATION AND INFORMATION
- Available to individuals or community groups by phone or appointment.
Topics include heart disease prevention, nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, child
health and development, and Medicaid and BadgerCare eligibility. Other topics available by
request. Wide variety of pamphlets available.
HEART
HEALTH RISK FACTORS - REPORT CARD
- During the summer of 2000, the residents of the seven North Shore
communities completed a Heart Health Survey. Contact the
North Shore Health Department for the results for your and your neighboring
communities. 550 surveys recipients were randomly selected from voter
registration lists in each community. The overall response was 49%.
59% of the respondents were age 35 and older. Results of the survey
indicate weight and lack of exercise to be major risk factors for residents of
our communities. The North Shore Health Department and the
Shorewood/Whitefish Bay Health Department, in collaboration with other
community groups, will be launching a weight control and leisure time physical
activity initiative.
HOME VISITS
BY REGISTERED NURSES
- For newborns, elderly, or others with health concerns or selected
communicable diseases. Also available by referral.
IMMUNIZATION CLINICS
- All recommended childrens immunizations and TB skin tests.
Tetanus, and TB skin tests for adults. Pneumonia shots for those over 65.
No appointment needed for clinics.

- Flu clinics in October and
November.
Please contact the North Shore Health Department for
actual dates and times of the Flu Clinics,
as they may not be scheduled at the same time as the Immunization Clinics.
LEAD TESTS
- By appointment. Blood tests for lead for at-risk children age 1 to 5
years.
SCHOOL SERVICES
- Health consultation, communicable disease control, immunization
record review, 6th grade hepatitis B clinics.
- Brown Deer: Weekly schedule of school visits by registered nurses.
Screening programs (vision, hearing, height, weight), health education, assessments and
evaluation.
SERVICE TO THE
COMMUNITY
- Nurses participate in local service groups such as Neighborhood
Service Project, Prevention Plus, Protect All Kids, and Continuing Care Coordinators.
TELEPHONE CONSULTATION
- Confidential health consultation with registered nurses available.
WOMENS HEALTH
- Mammograms and pap tests arranged with a network of local providers,
through a State-funded program. Free for eligible women. Education and low-cost referrals
also available for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and domestic violence.
