The Department receives feedback and oversight from the North Shore Board of Health.  The Board of Health consists of nine members representing each of the five participating communities. The Board meets at least quarterly.

Services and Programs

ADULT HEALTH SCREENING

  • 3rd Wednesday every month for a nominal triglycerides, HDL, LDL, and RATID, Glucose, BP and consultations with nurses

ANIMAL BITES

  • For questions on health effects of animal bites, contact the Health Department.  Report all animal bites to humans to:

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS

  • By appointment at the Health Department.  Also available last Tuesday of each month, 2:30 - 4 PM, at the North Shore Library, 6800 N. Port Washington Road, Glendale, WI.   Periodically at various senior residences.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CONTROL

  • Communicable diseases are reported to the Health Department by physicians, clinics, family members, or the ill person. The Health Department nurses offer investigation, education, and control measures to assure the safety of the individual, family, and community.

COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT

  • The Health Department’s team of registered nurses continuously assesses each community’s health needs and resources, to assure appropriate policies and services. Citizens and businesses are also involved in the assessment process.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

  • Investigation and referral of complaints concerning food establishments in all 5 communities, public swimming facilities, and human health hazards.
  • Information on food and water safety, air quality, lead, etc.
  • Inspection and licensing of food sellers and restaurants; swimming facility inspection.
  • Water quality monitoring (Doctors Park Beach).

HEALTH EDUCATION AND INFORMATION

  • Available to individuals or community groups by phone or appointment. Topics include heart disease prevention, nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, child health and development,  and BadgerCare eligibility. Other topics available upon request. Wide variety of pamphlets available.

HEART HEALTH RISK FACTORS - REPORT CARD

  • During the summer of 2000, the residents of the seven North Shore communities completed a Heart Health Survey.  Contact the North Shore Health Department for the results for your and your neighboring communities.  550 surveys recipients were randomly selected from voter registration lists in each community.  The overall response was 49%.  59% of the respondents were age 35 and older.  Results of the survey indicate weight and lack of exercise to be major risk factors for residents of our communities.  The North Shore Health Department and the Shorewood/Whitefish Bay Health Department, in collaboration with other community groups, will be launching a weight control and leisure time physical activity initiative.

HOME VISITS BY REGISTERED NURSES

  • For newborns, elderly, or others with health concerns or selected communicable diseases. Also available by referral.

IMMUNIZATION CLINICS

  • All recommended children’s immunizations and TB skin tests.   Hepatitis A & B shots, Tetanus, and TB skin tests for adults by appointment. Pneumonia shots for those over 65.  All adult immunizations have a fee.  No appointment needed for clinics.
  • Clinic Times and Locations:

            At the Health Department:        Second Tuesday of each month, 10 - 11 AM /

                                                                    Third Wednesday of each month, 3:30 - 4:30 PM

            At the North Shore Library:   Last Tuesday of each month, 4 - 5 PM

            At varying locations:            Flu clinics in October and November.

Please contact the North Shore Health Department for actual dates and times of the Flu Clinics,

as they may not be scheduled at the same time as the Immunization Clinics.

LEAD TESTS

  • By appointment. Screening Blood tests for lead for at-risk children age 1 to 5 years.

SCHOOL SERVICES

  • Health consultation, communicable disease control.

SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

  • Nurses participate in local service groups such as Neighborhood Service Project, Prevention Plus, Protect All Kids, and Continuing Care Coordinators.

TELEPHONE CONSULTATION

  • Confidential health consultation with registered nurses available.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

  • Mammograms and pap tests arranged with a network of local providers, through a State-funded program. Free for  women aged 50-64 who meet eligibility requirements.
