Measles

Measles and Rubella Outbreak

Since March 30th, 7 confirmed measles cases have been reported in southeastern Wisconsin.  There are also 2 confirmed rubella (German measles) cases in Waukesha County.  The North Shore Health Department continues to monitor the outbreak and has investigated several contacts of the measles and rubella cases.

Measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine provides effective protection.  2 doses of MMR are required for school children.   MMR is available at no cost at the 3 monthly  Health Department immunization clinics listed in the column on the right.

New Vaccine Requirements for Students
Starting with the 2008-09 school year, there are new vaccine requirements for students:
· 1 dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis) vaccine for    students entering grades 6, 9, and 12.
· A second dose of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine for students entering grades K5, 6, and 12.

These vaccines are
available free at the Health Department clinics listed at the right.

 West Nile Virus and Mosquitoes
The Health Department will be collecting water from municipal catch basins periodically throughout the summer and early fall to assess mosquito species and populations.

Residents can call the Dead Bird Reporting Hotline at 1-800-433-1610 to report sick or dead birds.  Protect your family from mosquito bites and mosquito-borne infections like encephalitis and West Nile virus:

●Empty standing water in buckets, sandboxes, pet dishes, tires, etc.

●Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools and potted plant trays at least once a week.

●Drain or fill temporary puddles with dirt.

●Properly maintain swimming pools

●Unclog rain gutters

●Use mosquito repellents with DEET, Picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus and follow all label directions

●Stay inside in the early morning and early evening when mosquitoes are active.

●Be sure window and door screens fit tight and are in good repair.

Call the Health Department at 414-371-2980 for additional information on West Nile virus and test results.

Doctors Park Beachwater Testing
The Health Department is testing the water at Doctor’s Park for coliform bacteria at least twice a week throughout the summer. Test results and beach advisories will be available from the Health Department or on the Beach Website: www.wibeaches.us Advisory signs will also be posted at the beach.

In 2007, the Health Department tested the beach water 26 times and closed the beach twice because of bacterial contamination.

Beachgoers can reduce the risk of fecal contamination of beaches:
o Do not feed gulls.
o Do not leave food scraps or containers on the beach.
o Do not walk your dog on or near a beach.
